DDC is a classification system that a library uses to organise books. Each book is issued a shelfmark number, which can be found on the spine of a book, i.e. 510.202 P317h2.
- For example, the first three numbers refer to the subject area: 510 (Mathematics)
- The numbers after the decimal point refer to a sub-section of the subject area.
- After the numbers are alphanumeric digits, which refer to the book's author or editor.
- All books are shelved in numerical and alphanumeric order.
